Launching ProPEDeAMCI: Promoting Physical Exercise for Dementia and Mild Cognitive Impairment

We are pleased to announce the launch of ProPEDeAMCI, a new European project funded under the Erasmus+ Sport Programme, dedicated to promoting the positive effects of physical exercise for people living with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), and other forms of dementia.

The project officially started in December 2025 and will run for 36 months, bringing together a multidisciplinary partnership of organisations from Greece, Italy, Belgium, Portugal, Spain, Cyprus, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, and the Netherlands. The initiative is coordinated by Alzheimer Hellas (Greece).

Why ProPEDeAMCI Matters

Scientific evidence increasingly shows that regular and adapted physical activity can play a key role in supporting cognitive, behavioural, physical, emotional, and social wellbeing in people affected by dementia and MCI. Despite this growing evidence, physical exercise is still underused in care pathways and professional practice.

ProPEDeAMCI was created to help bridge this gap by developing practical tools, guidelines, and training opportunities that can support healthcare professionals, sport professionals, caregivers, and organisations working in dementia care.

The project aims to:

  • promote the use of adapted physical exercise programmes;
  • support healthier and more active ageing;
  • improve quality of life for people living with dementia and MCI;
  • strengthen professional skills and knowledge;
  • share good practices across Europe.

The First Partnership Meeting in Thessaloniki

The project officially kicked off with the first transnational partnership meeting held in Thessaloniki, Greece, in February 2026.

Representatives from all partner organisations met in person to discuss the initial development of the project, define priorities, exchange experiences, and plan the next implementation steps. The meeting provided a valuable opportunity to reflect on current challenges and opportunities related to physical activity interventions in dementia care.

Current Activities

At this stage, the consortium is conducting an extensive scientific literature review focused on:

  • neuropsychological assessment tools;
  • physical performance evaluation methods;
  • exercise-based interventions for people with dementia and MCI.

Partners are working collaboratively to identify the most relevant scientific evidence that will guide the development of future project resources, methodologies, and training materials.

Looking Ahead

In the coming months, the partnership will continue its research activities while also beginning the development of two dedicated online platforms aimed at disseminating knowledge, resources, and training materials connected to the project.

Further updates, results, and opportunities to engage with the project will be shared soon.

Stay tuned and follow the journey of ProPEDeAMCI as we work together towards more active, inclusive, and supportive approaches to dementia care.
